YOGINI PHOEBE
Growing up, Phoebe and I danced together for many years. It's been more of those many years since we've seen each other, even though we've both lived in the same city for a long time.
I've always had a fascination with the human body; its lines and shapes. I guess ten years of dance will do that to you. Lately, I felt a need to photograph it. In a raw, natural way. Somewhere along the way a thought popped into my head.. YOGA. I WANT TO DO A YOGA SHOOT. WHO DO I KNOW WHO DOES YOGA. AND IS REALLY GOOD AT IT? How lucky am I to know such talented people who fit my brief and shout YES!
It took us months to get together. Phoebe back and forth between Bali and home, commitments at my end between work and children. Autumn became winter and then it seemed like we'd have to shelve the idea until the sun reappeared. But I thought bugger it - a free weekend presented itself so we jumped on it.
For me, shooting personal projects - whether big or small - is a really important part of the creative process. Through the quiet of winter, I have felt uninspired and flat; a fairly natural response to the darker months. An afternoon in the studio with my dear friend, and it felt like she breathed a new energy into me. Working with no expectation brings such freedom and ease; just like a biiiig breath out.. I just love it.
If you make shapes and lines with your body and would like to document it - whether in film or photographs - don't hesitate to give me a shout.
With generous permission, filmed at One Hot Yoga, where you can find Phoebe regularly.
